Schools across the globe had to embrace online education, in the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic. We grappled with Virtual Classrooms, E-learning content etc. – to keep the momentum of learning going on for our children. Though the concept of e-learning has been there since decades, we witnessed an e-learning boom, during this pandemic. Virtual classrooms and e-learning mode of education showed excellent potential for our Indian classrooms and now it is changing the landscape of our education system.

Schools are now getting ready for a safe re-opening – to welcome the students for the physical classrooms. In this context, here I share some views which show how this Covid-19 may restructure the system of education in the coming years.

Blended learning classrooms :

I believe, most of the post Covid classrooms are going to be blended learning classrooms. Blended learning is a teaching – learning approach which combines the traditional classroom teaching methods with the online mode. It has now proved more effective than simple online or offline mode. Study reports, it can result in high levels of student achievement.

Redefined role of teachers :

The post covid phase will also compel the educational institutions to redefine the role of teachers. Though our teachers, successfully transitioned to online, and made technology aided and enabled classrooms possible overnight, their role is going to be more complex and challenging, in the coming years.

They are expected to be technically and technologically more equipped and oriented. They have to facilitate learners by helping them to make judgements about the quality of sources of knowledge and information, available online. At the same time, he / she has to deal with the social and emotional issues of the learners, in order to make them fit to face the challenges of this century. Yes, she / he has to play a very challenging role in the post covid phase.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) :

Artificial intelligence (AI) is going to play a fascinating role in enhancing the teaching learning process. It has the following possibilities in education system.

  • It can enhance the instant communication amongst teachers, students and parents.
  • It can make the instant availability of reference materials and content.
  • It can make the online tutoring programmes readily available for the learners.

AI can give us tremendous benefits in the area of assessment and evaluation also:- in streaming the grading process, in making the quick availability of students’ data etc. AI has given ways to many Educational softwares, which have been already adapted by most of the schools. These softwares can impact education by giving way to individualized learning.

In short, post covid period is going to bring visible changes in the education system. Schools are emerging into better than the best, with the techno – friendly learning environment. At the same time Covid—19 taught us that education is not equivalent to just listening and learning which can be done online also, but it is a social process, teaching how to live, think and act by giving social space to peers and others. Virtual classrooms and virtualization of the facts had a deep impact on the students’ behaviour. This changed behaviour and the social gap between teachers and students may impact the physical schooling environment also, post covid. This is an important matter of concern for the educationists across the country. But let’s welcome this post covid education phase with an optimism – with a hope to convert our children as the best citizens, owing the best value system.
